Breaking the Yield Barrier: Heterosis in West African Pearl Millet


With the Rockefeller Foundation with co-funding from the Syngenta Foundation


Goal is to develop pearl millet top-cross hybrids with superior productivity and grain yield stability for West African production systems, to develop tools for breeding photo period sensitive millet hybrids; to strengthen seed sector development and marketing opportunities for pearl millet from West Africa, and to build national research capacity for breeding pearl millet hybrids. Research organizations Institut d’Economie Rurale (IER), Mali; Institut National de Recherche Agricole du Niger (INRAN), Niger; Institut National de l’Environnement et Recherche Agricole (INERA),Burkina Faso; Lake Chad Research Institut (LCRI), Maiduguri, Nigeria; Institut Senegalaise de Recherche Agricole (ISRA), Senegal; International Crops Research Institute for the Semiarid Tropics (ICRISAT).
