Syngenta Foundation Grant for Resource
Center on Marker Assisted Breeding

IRC is an online support tool for
marker assisted breeding with protocols, tutorials,
learning modules, literature and general resources,
such as information on writing proposals.

The Syngenta Foundation has recently approved a $30,000
grant for the Interactive Resource Center & Helpdesk at
Cornell's Institute for Genomic Diversity, to improve
access to marker assisted breeding information by researchers
of sorghum and millet two staple crops of Africa's dry
Sahel.
IRC is an online support tool for marker assisted
breeding with protocols, tutorials, learning modules,
literature and general resources, such as information
on writing proposals. Freely available data are also available
for download. Also posted are key links, including those
to funding opportunities, journals, and the African Molecular
Marker Network. A ‘helpdesk,’ a place for scientists ask
specific questions, is fully functional. Questions are
answered on a same-day basis from a volunteer team of
scientists from various fields (specializing in molecular
markers, population genetics, plant breeding, genetic
diversity, etc.).
Other upcoming plans for the Resource
Center include new learning modules, additional protocols,
a list of genotyping services available, contact information
to link researchers with similar interests. User information
including a “world map” of users will be compiled. A Scientific
News will feature selected articles each month.
