'Food Security and Biodiversity -Sharing the Benefits of Plant Genetic Diversity' a symposium in Basel Switzerland in partnership with Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the International Plant genetic resources Institute, examines controversies, new obligations and opportunities in sharing benefits and conserving the world's Plant genetic resources.

Symposium ‘On the Sahel –Sustainable Agriculture: Lessons and Opportunities’ in Bamako, Mali, in association with the Institute of the Sahel and the Mali’s Institute of Rural Economy.

The Syngenta Foundation and the International Foundation for Science start a new collaboration offering competitive grants to Malian scientists studying sustainable management of biological resources in the Sahel.

New research programme, 'Breaking the Yield Barrier', for developing and deploying pearl millet hybrids. Sponsored by the Rockefeller and the Syngenta Foundations; a partnership between the national research institutes of Mali, Senegal, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria; and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).

Meeting in Eritrea with University of Asmara, College of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture, on building tissue culture laboratories for teaching propagation and research.

Expanded Foundation launched with new reference base on organizations doing research on agriculture and rural livelihood improvement in the Sahel.

His Excellency President Kibaki of Kenya opens East Africa's first level II biosafety greenhouse in Nairobi. Built by the Insect Resistant Maize for Africa (IRMA), a collaboration between the Kenyan Agricultural Research Institute and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (known by the Spanish acronym 'CIMMYT'), and financed by the Syngenta Foundation.

Opening of new Geographical Information System (GIS) laboratory in Eritrea, on the campus of the University of Asmara.

August 2004

Invitations to bioformatics and genomics specialists for cereal annotation workshop capturing information from the rice genome to improve productivity of millet and sorghum, Africa's 'orphan crops'.

International conference in Nairobi on sustainable agriculture. Organized by Eco Agricultural Partners and hosted by the World Agroforestry Centre. Sponsorship by World Conservation Union, and other institutions including the Syngenta Foundation. Read more

'The inventors of Golden Rice, Ingo Potrykus and Peter Beyer, talk about their discovery and its future in a Foundation-sponsored lecture honouring World Food Day and UN Year of Rice. Syngenta's Adrian Dubock talks about the role of the private sector in Golden Rice research. Free DVD lecture offer on www.syngentaFoundation.org. increases monthly website traffic some 80%.

November 2004

In India, agreement is reached between Maharogi Sewa Samiti, Chandrapur and the Foundation to form a new collaboration. Roukayatou Zimmerman, from University of Bonn, begins socio economic research in Bangladesh for the Golden Rice Humanitarian Board to gauge impact of introducing biofortified crops. Her research is supported by a grant from the Foundation.

December 2004

Contributions are made directly and through Habitat for Humanity International to help rebuild and improve the livelihood of communities destroyed by the Tsunami in the coastal state of Tamil Nadu, India.
