His Excellency President Kibaki of Kenya opens East Africa's first level II biosafety greenhouse in Nairobi. Built by the Insect Resistant Maize for Africa (IRMA), a collaboration between the Kenyan Agricultural Research Institute and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (known by the Spanish acronym 'CIMMYT'), and financed by the Syngenta Foundation.

In India, agreement is reached between Maharogi Sewa Samiti, Chandrapur and the
Foundation to form a new collaboration. Roukayatou Zimmerman,
from University of Bonn, begins socio economic research in Bangladesh
for the Golden Rice Humanitarian Board to gauge impact of introducing
biofortified crops. Her research is supported by a grant from
the Foundation.

Contributions are made directly and through Habitat for Humanity International to
help rebuild and improve the livelihood of communities destroyed by the Tsunami in the coastal state of Tamil Nadu, India.
