Syngenta Foundation
chairman's letter
The World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg last September,
emphasized the key role that agriculture must play in reducing poverty, improving
food security and conserving the environment on which we all depend. The Summit
concluded that agriculture should be one of the five target areas where “concrete
results can and must be obtained”; the others were water, energy, health and
biodiversity, where sustainable agriculture can also make an important contribution.
The doubling of demand for agricultural goods and services over the next 25 years,
driven by population increases, economic growth, urbanization and the need to
reduce poverty and hunger, will have to be met through sustainable intensification
of agricultural production systems and more efficient use of natural resources –
particularly land and water. We must make better use of existing resources.
