Tucson, Arizona - Annotation Workshop for Sorghum and Millet
in Africa
Millions in AFrica depend upon millet and sorghum for
their livelihoods. Yet these crops receive less research
attention than other, more "commercially attractive"
cereals.
To address this imbalance, the syngenta Foundation sponsored
two workshops, one at the University of Arizona-Tucson, the
other in Nairobi Kenya. Geneticists, bioinformatics specialists,
and plant breeders from both the North and the South came together
to identify how newly mapped plant genomes could be used to
help these crops on which so many sub-saharan communities depend.
Funding for the workshops was also provided by the
Kirkhouse Trust and the Rockefeller Foundation
The Genetic Imperative: Harnessing marker-assisted plant breeding
for the African farmer Video is a 10 minute video that looks
at the meetings and technology behind marker assisted plant
breeding.
