Characteristics of the Nordeste Brazil region

Index Semi-arid agriculture The sahel region
Nordeste Brazil

The Northeast of Brazil covers 18.27% of Brazil. 841.260,9 km² of the NE are semi-arid and covers eight states (Piaui, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia).

The semi-arid region in Nordeste Brazil is characterized by the ecosystem of the Caatinga. (“Caatinga” originates from two words of the Tupi language, spoken by the Brazilian indigenous population, “caa” means “woods, vegetation” and “tinga” means “white”.) Its vegetation is mainly bushes and smaller trees, xerofilous, woody and deciduous, and often thorny. The Caatinga landscape is nearly completely white during the dry periods.

The soils are sandy and clay, poor in organic material. Because of the shortage of precipitation and the reduced capacity to store water in the soil, with the exception of the Rio São Francisco, the rivers hold water only during certain periods of the year.
