118 x 54 cm 5 strips, each 11 cm wide Cotton, hand-spun thread. 1978 81-x-449

Head cover, Dogon

This decoration is unique. It is embroidered, not woven. Using a sewing needle, a white cotton thread is sewn back and forth over two or three strips. The ends of the threads are tied at the edge of the weave to form fringes. Archaeology has shown that this technique was used by the Dogon culture in the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries.
