Keruw pey wrapper (skirt), Dogon
A much-washed wrapper, resist-dyed by folding and stitching prior to
immersion in indigo. The strips are sewn together using red
thread. In French, this kind of wrapper is a pagne, an ancient
term signifying textile or cloth, taking as its roots the
Portuguese word pano, and paño from the Spanish. It is a rectangular
piece of cloth that is worn almost universally by women. The
Dogon country is probably one of the last parts of West Africa
where dyers still use indigo from the plant. Interestingly,
indigo is associated with the color black throughout West
Africa, not blue.
